The Iona College men’s basketball team earned an unprecedented fourth straight MAAC tournament championship in early March. The Gaels became the first program in the 38-year history of the league to four-peat, with senior Rickey McGill ’19 becoming the first student-athlete to win four championships.
The four straight conference titles is the longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Tim Cluess’ Gaels gave No. 1 seeded North Carolina a scare in the NCAA Tournament, taking a five-point lead into halftime. It was just the second time a top-seeded Tar Heel squad trailed at halftime in the first round in their storied history.
Iona also earned the MAAC’s regular season championship earning both titles in the same season for the fourth time in history and first time since 2001.
