Nurses have always been heroes, and that has been made even more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the need for an additional 203,700 new RNs each year through 2026 to fill newly created positions and to replace retiring nurses, Iona has responded to the need and launched a new BS degree program in Nursing.
With official approval from the New York State Department of Education in place, Iona accepted its first class of elite students this past fall.
“In keeping with the mission and values of an Iona education, the nursing curriculum will prepare nurses who can both initiate and adapt to change, serve patients with compassion while demonstrating critical thinking in health care innovation, engage in bold leadership and advocacy, and seek knowledge in pursuit of a global culture of health,” said President Seamus Carey, Ph.D.
Susan Apold, Ph.D., RN, ANP-BC, GNP, FAAN, FAANP, one of the nation’s foremost leaders in the field of nursing who has experience founding and
developing several programs in New York State, is leading Iona’s new Bachelor of Science degree program in Nursing.
Iona’s nursing program will be housed in a state-of-the-art, 7,500 square-foot learning facility complete with all of the newest equipment, technology and simulated learning opportunities. Small-group, clinical instructional settings with an 8-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio will ensure personalized attention.
The nursing program will add to Iona’s already excellent health care offerings—including Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology and Audiology, and Marriage and Family Counseling—and will emphasize an interdisciplinary focus on collaboration and interaction with professionals and other students on necessary services for everyone from pediatric to geriatric populations.
