Transformative Investment in Iona Rowing: An Unprecedented Year

Over the past year, there has been a transformative investment in the Iona University Rowing program by the University and its alumni. The 2024 season marked another incredible year, highlighted by unprecedented success in fundraising efforts. This year, Iona Rowing accounted for over 40 percent of the total dollars raised for Iona Athletics, setting a new record for the program.

This achievement underscores what rowers have always known: that rowing is special. They are bonded to their fellow rowers through countless early morning practices that tested their resolve. These shared experiences on the Sound not only shaped the college years of Iona Rowers but laid the foundation for who they are today.

The funds raised were instrumental in purchasing a new 4+ racing shell and establishing a rowing scholarship endowment in memory of Jim Barrett ’81. A tremendous thank you goes to Joseph Steccato ’87, ’90MBA, and Patricia Barrett-Steccato ’87 for leading the charge.

Additionally, heartfelt gratitude goes to Larry Trainor ’77BA, ’81MBA, and Marilyn Musial-Trainor ’85BBA, ’94MBA for their generosity in purchasing a new 8+ racing shell in memory of Robert J. Musial. This new 8+ will arrive in the summer of 2025, and Larry and Marilyn’s generosity will be celebrated at the upcoming Novak Invitational in April 2025. The remaining funds were added to Brother Novak’s Endowment for Rowing and used to purchase new equipment for the team.

As the team continues to pursue excellence and foster a culture of hard work and camaraderie, the Iona University Rowing Alumni continue to embody the motto “Fight the Good Fight.” Through their unwavering support, they ensure that Iona Rowing continues to thrive and succeed, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
