The 2024 Summer Olympic Games saw several Iona Gaels making their mark on the world stage. Members of the Iona communityâboth past and presentâshowcased their exceptional talents among over 10,000 elite athletes from around the globe.
The highlight for Gael Nation was the gold medal victory of Emma Hayes, former head coach of the Iona womenâs soccer team. Hayes led the U.S. Womenâs National Team to clinch the gold in a thrilling final match against Brazil.
While in Paris, Hayes took a moment to reflect on her time at Iona during an interview with Bruce Beck, executive-in-residence at Iona and NBC New Yorkâs lead sports anchor.
âI often tell people itâs my fondest memories in coaching. I was there for three years and had the most wonderful time,â Hayes shared with Beck. âIt taught me a lot about being involved in a community like Iona. To those Gaels playersâI love you to bitsâand Iona thank you for giving me a big opportunity. I without a doubt wouldnât be in this position without you.â
This win was just part of the Gaelsâ success story at the Olympics. Juana Camilion â22, â23MA added to the Gaelsâ medal count by securing a silver medal for Spain in womenâs 3×3 basketball. Camilionâs performance on the court was a testament to her skill and determination, qualities that were honed during her time at Iona.
Leonard Korir â12, meanwhile, represented Team USA with pride, competing in the marathon event while MaeĚl Gouyette â23MA showcased his athletic prowess for France, participating in the menâs 1,500-meter.
Ionaâs presence also extended beyond the competition fields. Beck reported on the Games live from Paris for NBC, adding his expertise to the eventâs coverage, and Nico Laveris â23MS also played a role behind the scenes as part of the production team.
