The 2024 Summer Olympic Games saw several Iona Gaels making their mark on the world stage. Members of the Iona community—both past and present—showcased their exceptional talents among over 10,000 elite athletes from around the globe.

The highlight for Gael Nation was the gold medal victory of Emma Hayes, former head coach of the Iona women’s soccer team. Hayes led the U.S. Women’s National Team to clinch the gold in a thrilling final match against Brazil.

While in Paris, Hayes took a moment to reflect on her time at Iona during an interview with Bruce Beck, executive-in-residence at Iona and NBC New York’s lead sports anchor.

“I often tell people it’s my fondest memories in coaching. I was there for three years and had the most wonderful time,” Hayes shared with Beck. “It taught me a lot about being involved in a community like Iona. To those Gaels players—I love you to bits—and Iona thank you for giving me a big opportunity. I without a doubt wouldn’t be in this position without you.”

This win was just part of the Gaels’ success story at the Olympics. Juana Camilion ’22, ’23MA added to the Gaels’ medal count by securing a silver medal for Spain in women’s 3×3 basketball. Camilion’s performance on the court was a testament to her skill and determination, qualities that were honed during her time at Iona.

Leonard Korir ’12, meanwhile, represented Team USA with pride, competing in the marathon event while Maël Gouyette ’23MA showcased his athletic prowess for France, participating in the men’s 1,500-meter.

Iona’s presence also extended beyond the competition fields. Beck reported on the Games live from Paris for NBC, adding his expertise to the event’s coverage, and Nico Laveris ’23MS also played a role behind the scenes as part of the production team.
