When classes were moved online in Spring 2020, Iona student-athletes rose to the occasion in the classroom, producing a banner year academically. For the semester, all 21 programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, with 16 recording a 3.5 or higher and nine earning a 3.75 or higher. The overall GPA for Gael student-athletes for the spring stood at an impressive 3.67.
Throughout the year, Maroon & Gold teams saw 145 different student-athletes named to MAAC All-Academic squads. The distinction is awarded to those who have completed two semesters at Iona and maintain a 3.20 GPA. This summer, 229 Gaels were named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, open to all student-athletes who maintain the 3.20 standard.
Five individual Gaels were honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) with regional and national academic awards. Cross country/track & field’s Christian Alberico, Jac Hopkins and Egle Morenaite, softball’s Marnie Skinner and volleyball’s Taylor Cole were named CoSIDA Academic All-District. Alberico and Hopkins were named CoSIDA Academic All-American. Golf’s Kritsarin Oukosavanna was named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar.
Programs recognized by their respective coaches’ organizations included softball, men’s and women’s cross country/track & field, men’s water polo and men’s and women’s swimming and diving. Iona women’s track & field was recognized as having the highest team GPA in NCAA Division I by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA). Women’s swimming was named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for the 21st consecutive semester. The men’s program was also honored for the 18th time in the last 21 semesters.
