Iona College President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., and his wife, Noreen Carey, today announced the creation of a new endowed scholarship. The Seamus and Noreen Carey Scholarship, which will be awarded to an Iona student from a New York Archdiocese high school, reinforces the College’s foundational commitment to diversity, faith and opportunity.
“Iona College was built upon the mission of providing a quality education to New York’s immigrant working class, grounded in the values of the Irish Christian Brothers and the steadfast belief that education transforms lives,” said President Carey. “Noreen and I not only share this belief but are committed to doing all we can to help further that commitment and continue the legacy for the next generation of Iona students.”
Throughout Iona’s history, scholarship support has provided access to opportunity to deserving students and helped change the lives of countless young men and women. “We are honored to have President Seamus Carey and his wife, Noreen, join the 41 alumni and friends who, in the past five years, have created endowed scholarships through the $150 million Iona Forever campaign effort,” stated Paul Sutera, senior vice president for Advancement and External Affairs. “As relatively new members of the Iona family, they immediately saw the impact a scholarship can have and wanted to create their personal legacy at Iona.”
In reflecting on the remarkable achievements of Blessed Edmund Rice, who founded the Christian Brothers to educate the disenfranchised children of Ireland, the Careys wanted to put their values into action in a similar way. Today, many young students in our Catholic schools, especially those in the inner city, are on the margins, facing discrimination and confronting barriers of access and opportunity to a quality education. Recognizing education as the most powerful means for changing lives and society, the Careys decided to establish this new scholarship fund. Going forward, the scholarship will be part of Iona’s 110 endowed scholarship awards that are presented annually to deserving students.
“An Iona education empowers students to forge their own paths,” said Noreen Carey. “Seamus and I are happy to provide this scholarship to a deserving student who upholds the values of faith, compassion and hard work, which are central qualities of the Iona character.”
