One of the top defensive performers in Iona women’s lacrosse history was also the top academic performer for the College’s Class of 2018. Gabriella DiDomizio ’18 gave the valedictory address at the 2018 Honors Convocation at the Hynes Center in May.
“Gabriella is the epitome of a student-athlete,” noted her coach Michelle Mason. “I’m proud of her commitment and pride for the institution and program. She is inclusive, respectful and positive, and went out of her way to support teammates both academically and athletically.”
Named 2016 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, DiDomizio is Iona’s single-game, single-season and career leader in caused turnovers. The stat implies its meaning: a defender’s action on an opponent led to a change in possession. In fact, three of Iona’s top five single-season caused turnover performances belong to the recent graduate. DiDomizio began her career on the 2015 MAAC All-Rookie team and was named All-MAAC in the next three seasons. She appeared in every game in her career, starting all but three contests and served as a team captain as a junior and senior.
DiDomizio’s academic prowess outshined her outstanding athletic accomplishments. A chemistry major, she was touted as the top freshman chemistry student earning the program’s Stellar Award. She also earned an ACS Undergraduate Award in analytical chemistry, and co-authored an article in Langmuir, a journal published by the American Chemical Society. DiDomizio is a member of both Gamma Sigma Epsilon chemistry honor society and the Delta Epsilon Sigma national honor society. She was honored with Iona Athletics’ Joseph O’Connell Award as the top female senior student-athlete.
Following graduation, DiDomizio will pursue her Ph.D. in chemistry at Penn State University.
